The Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund was founded by Mrs. Olga Lopes–Seales in 1954, who was then a Radio Broadcaster for the Guyana Broadcasting Cooperation. She wanted to help a few children in need at Christmas time, so she sought the permission to use the Radio Station for appealing to the public for assistance.
The response from the public was overwhelming; she received clothing, shoes, toys and cash, which enabled to start The Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund for hundreds of children and which has since become an annual Party, where toys are distributed to each child.
After Aunty Olga, as she was fondly called migrated in 1966, Mrs Bernice Mansell, who was then the Secretary/ Treasurer took over and continued the work in various parts of the country. Mrs. Bernice Mansell, a Stalwart serving the needs of the children for over three decades, resigned in 1998, and the Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund Committee has continued to serve the needy children in all the Regions through the year.

Dear Donor;
The Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund was founded in 1954, by a Radio Broadcaster who looked out the window of The Guyana Broadcasting Corporation and saw some needy children playing in the street. She thought of holding a Christmas party for the children. The first party was broadcast on Radio and was so well received by the people of Guyana that the Radio’s Needy Children’s Fund was started. The fund is managed by a voluntary committee of twelve persons.
The response from the public was and continues to be overwhelming; the fund receives clothing, shoes, toys and cash, which enables us to look after hundreds of children. The Christmas party, where toys are distributed to needy children in all ten regions of Guyana continues to be held annually and presently caters for approximately 5000 children across Guyana. The work of the fund has evolved over the last 54years to include the following activities:
